Friday, 03 September 2010 05:24

Helena, MT – On Thursday, September 9th at 4:00 PM, join the Great Falls Development Authority/High Plains Financial and the Small Business Administration for a ribbon cutting reception at the Staybridge Suites Courtyard at 201 3rd Street Northwest in Great Falls.  Staybridge Suites Courtyard obtained an SBA 504 loan in July 2009, resulting in 46 jobs in the community.  This project would not have been possible without the cooperation of High Plains Financial, the SBA and Stockman Bank.

If you’ve never heard of 504 financing or you want to know more about financing programs in general, then you’ll want to attend this free reception.  There will be a brief presentation on the SBA 504 Loan Program by Montana SBA District Director Michelle Johnston and Lender Relations Specialist Tom White.  In addition, there will be a tour of the property as well as an opportunity to meet the Great Falls Development Authority/High Plains Financial loan team.

The SBA 504 loan program is a long-term financing tool for economic development within a community to start, build and grow businesses.  This program provides growing businesses with long-term, fixed-rate financing for major fixed assets, such as land and buildings.

MSU Billings student teams use experience to put theory into practice

MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES — Senior College of Business student at Montana State University Billings are looking for business owners who need help with their business plans, a project that will not only add value to area businesses, but will provide valuable educational experience for MSU Billings students.

The project is an ongoing effort by Dr. Jennifer Leonard, assistant professor of management at the MSU Billings College of Business, to help students and businesses in the Billings region. Leonard said that students in her Management 488: Business Strategy class use the experience to put classroom theory into practice and showcase student talents.

The work would be done this fall with reports and recommendations issued in December.

This is a great opportunity to help students show how they can become valued employees, said Leonard. Students have experienced success in the past on many levels.

Student teams take ideas or challenges and report back to the businesses or non-profit groups, which can then use them. Last year, students used the class to understanding the feasibility and development of a business plan for a regional fire training facility in the Billings region.  In previous years, students have entered business plans into competitions that have won regional and national awards.

Tester asks Montanans to Comment on Port of Whitetail

Senator launches website to gather public input during halt in construction

(BIG SANDY) – Senator Jon Tester is asking Montanans for their ideas on the recent decision by the Canadian government to close its side of the Port of Whitetail to traffic from the U.S. in April of 2011.

Tester urged Montanans to share their feedback online at tester.senate.gov/Whitetail.

Before Canada’s announcement, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security had planned to upgrade the Port of Whitetail and remove asbestos in the buildings there.  At Tester’s request, the Department temporarily halted the work in order to gather public input.

“I’m leaning toward recommending we close down the Port of Whitetail,” Tester said.  “But if folks have other ideas, this timeout in construction is a good opportunity to hear them out.  I want to hear all ideas from folks in Montana to make sure this is the best path forward.”

Tester will share the comments he receives with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
