MSU Tech Transfer Offering 2 Opportunities

ImageBozeman (M. Becker) - A seed coating that can increase plants' abilities to withstand salt and a new tool for fighting cancer are two new technologies available for licensing to interested companies and entrepreneurs through Montana State University's Technology Transfer Office.

The first technology, a coating that can be applied to many species of plant seeds, can increase plants' salt tolerance, growth and yield. MSU and U.S. Geologic Survey researchers found that fungi living symbiotically with plants in stressful, high-salt conditions confer tolerances to the plants, a phenomenon the researchers call adaptive-symbiosis. By isolating these fungi, researchers substantially increased, over the course of a single growing season, a plant's tolerance for salt-levels as high as those found in seawater.

Unemployment Falls Slightly to 4.1%
Friday, 18 July 2008

(HELENA) --- The state seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell slightly by 0.1% in June to 4.1%.  The national unemployment rate stayed steady at 5.5 percent in June.

"The June employment figures indicate that Montana's economy is continuing to add jobs and may be stabilizing from the impact of high fuel prices and national economic concerns," says Labor Commissioner Keith Kelly.  "It is nice to hear a bit of good economic news, even if this decrease in the unemployment rate is small."

The Number of Montana Businesses Continue to Rise
Thursday, 17 July 2008

HELENA- Secretary of State Brad Johnson announced that the number of new small businesses in Montana continues to grow. Assumed Business Names, the most common legal standing under which a small business gets started, have increased every year for the past three years. Now, at the midway point of 2008, those numbers are on track for an even larger increase this year.

Johnson said, "In the Secretary of State's office, we're committed to making it easier to start your own business in Montana. The paperwork to file a new business is reduced, the fees have remained low, and the result is that Montanans demonstrate their entrepreneurial spirit in ever-increasing numbers."
